Pennington Biomedical Research Center Sponsors Diabetes Prevention Educational Program "The Weight is Over"- 03.09.11

BATON ROUGE, LA – The Pennington Biomedical Research Center will hold a free community diabetes prevention workshop on Tuesday, March 15, on how to eat, think and exercise for health living. The program is entitled “The Weight is Over.”

          The event is sponsored by Pennington’s Botanical Research Center and is a community program open to the public. The conference will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Exhibits open at 5 p.m. and the program begins at 5:30 p.m.  While there is no fee to attend the conference, those interested are asked to register in advance at www.pbrc.edu.  Light refreshments will be served.

          Featured speakers include Catherine Champagne, Ph.D., R.D., on what you need to know about diet; Timothy Church, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., on effective exercise strategies, and Valerie Myers, Ph.D., on what you need to know about the psychology of healthful living.

          “It is our goal to help the community to identify and learn more about healthy living. Individuals can take action steps for their own health and well being, thereby decreasing their incidence of diabetes,” said William Cefalu, M.D., director of the Pennington Botanical Research Center.  “We know that diet and exercise are vital to the prevention of type 2 diabetes,” he added.

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is at the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the causes of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. Itis a campus of the Louisiana State University System and conducts basic, clinical and population research.
